Their primary function is to ensure that a permanent pilot light is in operation so that when heat is required, the main gas burner is properly ignited. Thermopiles are placed in gas applications to detect the presence of a flame for safety purposes by shutting off potential gas flow to a burner. A thermopile is an assembly of multiple thermocouples to increase millivolt output. Robertshaw thermopiles have two types of connections: coaxial and dual-wire spade connectors.
